In May 2025 I’m doing some meetings and events about practice-based research in the UK, the highlight of which is at Winchester School of Art, the famous art school which was the home to wonderful pedagogy-shattering experimentalism in the 1960s (when Brian Eno was there!), and these days – now as part of the University of Southampton – is still a hub for boundary-pushing creativity.
Here’s what the blurb says about the talk:

Practice-Based Research: Anxiety, epiphany, and some other feelings
Creative practice-based research is compelling and rewarding, but also disconcerting. Its open and exploratory nature is why we love it, but is also why people question whether it is ‘proper’ research – even though all rich and meaningful research should be an unfolding creative process. In this session David Gauntlett will talk about some of the feelings in practice-based research and encourage you to share some of your own.
Professor David Gauntlett is Canada Research Chair in Creative Practice at Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada, where he helps to run a major practice-based PhD program. He was previously Director of Research at Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design, University of Westminster, UK. He is the author of ten books, including Making is Connecting (2011/2018), and Creativity (2022). He makes music as Sculpture Projects and runs the record label, Unfolding Records. His next book is Practice-Based Research and Research-Creation: An Introductory Guide (2027).
