Two books on the go

I remembered that I am much happier, in my life, when I have a book on the go – i.e. when I am writing a book – and a recent recalibration of plans means that I now currently have two books on the go:

Fundamentals of Practice-Based Research and Research-Creation: How art, music and creativity generate knowledge and ideas (2026) will be a short book which sets out the case for how practice-based research and research-creation really are proper research methods, on a par with – and in some ways better than – the more conventional quantitative and qualitative research methods understood by social scientists. That might seem quite a basic case to be making, but I think it’s worth writing down, because people don’t seem to especially make the argument *for* practice-based research – they just get on with doing it, which is reasonable enough, but I thought it would be good to set out the fundamental argument for its existence and value.

Actual Creative Humans: Recentering human creativity in the face of AI and Big Tech (2028) is a whole new book about what artists and creators can do in a world increasingly smothered by AI and the ‘tech bro’ billionaires powering forward at the expense of human creativity, the global climate, social justice, and almost everything that previously made life meaningful.

Neither of the covers shown above are final, and the title of Actual Creative Humans might change during the writing process, but I am very happy to have two book projects that I am excited about.
